FIRST YEARS
Henrik Ramsay was one of the most influential persons in the Finnish sailing society in 20th century. He was sailing from early childhood and in 1924 he acquired his first 6mR yacht “Svalan”. In 1928 he commissioned his second six metre “Renata”.
When Ramsay in 1934 sailed in the Gold Cup with Fin-35 “Elinore” he was concerned about the boats being too ‘overgrown’ both in length and in weight. He therefore commissioned the constructor Einar Olofsson to draw a new yacht, his 3rd, bearing this in mind.
The yacht was built in grand bassam mahogany at Åbo Båtvarf and on 24th of May 1936 she arrived to NJK Blekholmen (http://www.njk.fi/hamn_blek_english.htm), Helsinki, and gets the name “Arneta”.
To quote Ramsay “the principle, which I’ve try to use, is that a yacht should have a 3-syllabe female name, which ends with an ‘a’. The female name corresponds to the yachts entire being, the three short syllables, preferable with an ‘r’ as a consonant, gives the impression of speed, and the last vowel is well heard when called”.
One aim with Arneta was to bring back the ‘Gold Cup’ to Finland. When Arneta was Savecommissioned, it was also planned that She would have been put on display in the Finnish pavilion in the Paris World’s Fair 1937 (Expo Internationale des Arts et des Techniques dans la vie Moderne). She was sailed by Ramsay until 1940 when he took on the assignment as Finland’s foreign minister, which sooner lead to the Soviet-Finland war tribunal after second world war and imprisonment.
In prison he wrote the book “Sommar och Segel”, which sooner became one of the most important books on pre-1950 yachting in Finland. In this book ‘Arneta’ is often mentioned and pictured on her early years.
ARNETA is one of the few remaining sixes, which have sailed in southern Finland ever since she was built. More information and history about ARNETA is found in the book ”Sexornas Jakt”.
LEGENDS, ANECDOTES AND CURIOSA
It is said that Ramsay named the yacht ARNETA, because he wanted to save old letters of his old 6mR boat RENATA.
1977 ARNETA and IRMA crashed in the sailing regatta of Hangö and ARNETA sank. She was lifted up and repaired.
In 2003 the present owner acquires the book “Ocean Racing” by Alfred F. Looms - 67 years since Ramsay dedicated this book to a friend in 1936. The book is included in the yacht’s library.
